It feels like I blinked, and suddenly it’s October! So I may have missed the September ‘back-to-school’ window just a little bit, but I figure treating yourself to a new tote bag doesn’t need to be limited to just one month, right? Hopefully not, because I have a few options to share!

There are a few key features I look for when considering a good tote bag—first and foremost, function, and then, of course, style, size, and durability. Below, you’ll find the best tote bags I’ve come across while considering a purchase for myself, all of which meet my criteria. I’ve also included a few ideas for what you might want to stash inside.

Let’s start with the totes, sorted by material.

Leather

The classic option. It’s versatile, highly functional, and very durable. I appreciate that a leather tote doesn't feel too precious, making it perfect for everyday use.

  • N/S Park Large Leather Tote Bag

  • Mega Sprout Tote Black Glossy

  • Oversized Shopper

  • Sac Supple

  • Serif Tote

  • Brown XL Leather Idaho Tote

Canvas

An enduring favorite—and for good reason. Casual in its energy, it’s lightweight, and often the most cost-effective option (unless you’re third on the list below). I also love using mine as a gym bag for Pilates or as a chic market tote.

  • Boat and Tote

  • Beach Bag

  • Idaho XL Leather Trimmed Twill Tote Bag

Suede

Adding a pop of suede is a surefire way to elevate an everyday look. However, this is definitely the most delicate of the options, so it requires a little more care when handling.
